Goal Setting

By angietorres

For a while I haven’t posted any new goals. Things get complicated. My job was taking a lot of my time. Motivation was down. And then I wake up to find the almost half of 2012 is over.

If I look back on 2012, I don’t have any major accomplishments. I have read way too many books. Watched more TV than ever. Gained a lot of weight. Played more video games than average. Improved my guitar skills a bit. Learned piano a bit. Taught Simba a few commands. Started pyaar.me. Created several dev projects. Painted a bit. Made a few videos.

Seems like I did a lot but it doesn’t feel like it. The problem I think might be because I spent my energies on so many varied things, I never get really good at any.

Starting this month, I am going to work on establishing my good habits that I have lost. I want to get back in running. But for now, I will start walking. Daily long walk with Simba would be nice. And I can listen to my books or kindle while walking.

Talking about Simba, I need to train him better. He will be getting daily lessons now.

Other than above 2 habits, I don’t want to set any goals this month. However, this year, I would like to:

  1. work on my guitar skills using Rock Band 3 & Rocksmith,
  2. improve my java skills & maybe get advanced java/j2ee certification,
  3. keep learning Android.

March’s Goals

Resolutions and goals

Pic by Ed Donahue at flickr

Every year I start off with setting a lot of goals. And as year progress I start to care less about goals or resolutions. That’s why I like setting monthly goals.

In January, I wanted to run or basically be active everyday. I did pretty good. In February, I wanted to pray every day, but I prayed maybe 3 or 4 times.

So March, it is now. This month is also my birthday. I don’t plan on adding a new goal. Just going to enjoy this month. We all need some time in our life where we can just totally relax and not worry about goals & things. Just live in the moment every once in a while and enjoy what we have. I think that’s what we really hope from all these goals. That one day when we have achieved all our goals, then we can finally relax and enjoy life to the fullest .

2012 Resolutions

Running on empty

This time, it is simple, join martial arts school and go there with Hina twice a week. :)

Another thing I am going to do is changing habits or creating new habits. One new habit each month. So that’s 12 habits in one year. These can be thought of as mini resolutions. I got the idea from a recent Zen Habits post.

  1. So in January, I plan to get back into running. Not planning to go all out at once, as we are also starting martial arts school. Just need to run or walk a few minutes everyday. Running for me is like meditation. I find it very hard to sit still but it very easy to meditate while running. Other thing is with Kindle‘s Text to Speech, I have tons of blogs and books to listen to. I could do it while running on treadmill. I find running without music or Kindle much more soothing. However, if I don’t get into zone quickly, then I get bored easily. So I will be alternating between running with Kindle and without it. Time to find my Nike Plus thing now.
  2. In February, I want to get back to praying in the morning. This means waking up much earlier and finding time for shower and praying. Maybe go out and run then come take a shower and pray.
  3. In March, I want to start writing everyday. Probably a blog post. Maybe private posts. Either way I want to write more.
For now, I only thought about these habits. Even the habits for February and March are not set in stone for now. As the new month, gets closer I will think about what I want to change that month. A few other things, I know I should do but not sure how and when are:
  1. Eliminate sugar from my diet
  2. Bring lunch from home
  3. Take more photos
  4. Beat Hina in Everybody Dance
  5. Eat out less
  6. Cook more
  7. Clean up the closet
  8. Do good
  9. Wake up by sun rise
  10. Sleep less
  11. Drink more water
  12. play guitar

What I did this year, so far?

  1. Quit smoking
  2. Learned a little Spanish
  3. Learned a little Arabic
  4. Read at least 9 books in six months (all Affiliate links):
    1. Outliers: The Story of Success
    2. The Drunkard’s Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives (Vintage)
    3. Head First Ajax
    4. Web 2.0: A Strategy Guide: Business thinking and strategies behind successful Web 2.0 implementations.
    5. PHP and MySQL Web Development (4th Edition) (Developer’s Library)
    6. Founders at Work: Stories of Startups’ Early Days
    7. Transcending CSS: The Fine Art of Web Design (Voices That Matter)
    8. The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2
    9. The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything
  5. Started running and being more active
  6. Updated my old websites
  7. Started new project, iGree.nu
  8. Started new project with Patrick
  9. Started working on a project with Blake

I am ending monthly goals as I haven’t been able to keep up with my goals in May and June. Instead I have just one goal for the rest of year that is to start my business.

Reblog this post [with Zemanta]

Goals 2009.6

It’s that time of month again, when I evaluate my monthly goals. May goals were:

  • Maintain running at 7mph for 15 minutes.

I have been slacking going to gym. But I was able to run once more at 7mph for 15 minute. Again I had to push myself a lot.

  • 3 sets of 10 pull ups.

I completely failed here. I wish I could do pull ups at home. Due to work, I missed gym so many times & yesterday I could not even do as many pull up as last month.

  • Finish iGree.nu for launch on June 1st.

Unlikely, this is going to happen. Still working on it but work is sucking all my free time. Also I am using a lot of free evenings to network.

  • Convert my old sites to modern standards.

I did clean up & updated almost all of my old sites. Some need more work but I will do that later.

All in all, this month has been as productive as I hoped for. June is about to start. It is amazing to think that half of the year is already over, almost in a blink of an eye. My June goals are:

  • Run/swim or bike 3 times a week. I don’t care but stats so much. The weather is getting nicer, I rather run or bike outside now. Also I love to run with Kazadi, Patrick, Anthony or cohabitat crew. So in June, I will just relax do these activities without worrying about how I am running or biking or swimming.
  • Do random health/exercise challenges like, 100 pushups or 300 crunches.
  • Spanish. It is easier to learn 2 languages at same time, or I guess I just get  bored with one language quickly. But this month, I will focus on Spanish. I will be happy if I finish Level 1 of Rosetta Stone.
  • Continue working on iGree.nu. This is not the top priority project anymore.
  • Patrick & mine secret project :)
    • Create corporation
    • Design a website
    • Write a business plan

That’s all!

Goals 2009.5

It’s end of month, time to see how I did this month & come up with new goals for May.

Let’s look at my April’s goals:

  • Continue going to 24 Hour Fitness, at least, 3 times a week. 3 sets of 5 chin ups & 15 minutes of running at 7 mph.

I slightly messed up here. I missed gym for almost 2 weeks in April. However, I started with 2 chin ups but now I can do 3 sets of 6 chin ups/pull ups. Today I accomplished the last part of this goal, ran for 15 minutes at 7 mph continuously.

  • Release MVP on or around April 15th.

Sign up here. There is not much on that page that’s why I didn’t advertise but it is there now, at least.

Free Run

May 2009 goals are:

  • Maintain running at 7mph for 15 minutes. (I really had to push myself for this).
  • 3 sets of 10 pull ups.
  • Finish iGree.nu for launch on June 1st.
  • Finish SCJD project. Convert my old sites to modern standards.

My previous goals are here:

My favourite blog at the moment: emadibrahim.com

Since the my decision to go full time indipendent & start my own startup, I have been reading more about business & doing less technical stuff. Lately, I have been reading this blog. Emad quit his job last year to start his business. He got a lot of useful advice & information for some one who is starting his own business. His last post, “I quit 1 Year Anniversary”, is a great, he paints realistic picture of what it is like to be entrepreuner. I feel almost same way as he does in his original post “I quit“.

Vacaciones!

Goals 2009.4

My March goals were:

  • Startup – phase 1 (honestly I am not sure what it means right now.)

Right now, I have very clear vision of finished product. I have been playing with various technologies and trying to figure out how to execute this. I think phase 1 of startup was successful.

  • Workout regularly at my dojo until my account is canceled. Then at 24 hour Fitness.

I quit going to Mixed Martial Arts class but I have been going to 24 Hour Fitness, almost daily. I am starting to enjoy the workout.

  • Spend less than $400 on food, entertainment and other non-essential stuff. This month I was way above my set budget, so next month I plan to spend way under my set budget.

I have only spent about $390 on food and entertainment. Just 2 more days in this month now.

As for my April 2009 goals, here they are:

  • Continue going to 24 Hour Fitness, at least, 4 3 times a week. (Reduce body fat to 12.0 or less w/o losing weight). 3 sets of 5 chin ups & 15 minutes of running at 7 mph.
  • Release MVP on or around April 15th.

My previous goals:

Fulfilled vs. Excited

A Bit More Balanced

It’s been a while since last post. I have been busy working on my start-up idea. Right now, I have very clear vision of it and I know exactly what I want to achieve. Everyday after work, I spend 2-3 hours planning and researching on my project. I can tell you what my project is, its not really a secret. It is a book swapping website. Its the specific implementation ideas which will differentiate it from current book swapping websites. I will launch it on June 1st.

Here is something amazing I realized, I feel fulfilled after spending hours on reading some boring APIs. My project has become my exclusive activity lately. It seems boring but almost worth it for the satisfaction I get at the end of day. Back in the days, when I used to stay up all night partying, it was exciting but next day I will feel empty. Even when I go on vacations, vacations are nice and I have a lot of fun. But when I get back I feel like crashing sort of sugar rush fading away. I don’t know if everyone feels this way after great rush of adrenaline & excitement but I feel empty.

I was just looking at my goals for March, and so far, I am doing great

  • Startup – phase 1

Now I know what phase one means. Its planning and defining exactly what my product will do. There are still many unknown but the big picture and features are well defined now.

  • Workout regularly at my dojo until my account is canceled. Then at 24 hour Fitness.

Okay didn’t stay with dojo as it was interfering with my after-work plans to work on my project. However, every morning I go to 24 Hour Fitness and workout with Karl. I am already able to see some difference. :)

  • Spend less than $400 on food, entertainment and other non-essential stuff. This month I was way above my set budget, so next month I plan to spend way under my set budget.

Not bad at all this month, $200 so far on food. Most of the time I have been eating outside.

What I learned from Firefox developer, Blake Ross

I was reading Blake Ross’s interview in Founders at Work: Stories of Startups’ Early Days (Recipes: a Problem-Solution Ap). He said something about giving an impression as if you are ahead of where you really are. If your project is done only 50%, you say that it is done 75%. The reason is not to mislead but to increase pressure on you to make your lie a reality. Its an interesting concept. Perhaps I will use it :) .
